Long Beach Sporting Activities

With its year round agreeable climate and a bevy of local sports fans, it is no wonder that the sporting life is so popular in Long Beach, California. From water polo to Formula One racing, it seems like there is a world of options for a person who has interest in sporting activities. Several print and online publications have full calendars for all of the upcoming sporting events in the area.

While it may seem strange, Long Beach has a proud tradition of water polo, with many students at Wilson High School competing on the national team and in the Olympics. The school is often considered to be the top water polo program in the nation and one of the reasons why the United States is a strong threat to take the gold medal at every summer Olympics competition.

Racing also has a large share of its fans located in the Long Beach city. In fact, it is a single racing event every April that draws the largest sporting crowd. Attendance figures soar each year when the Long Beach Grand Prix comes to town. With over thirty years of history, the event is celebrated by an entire weekends of races, with many fans also visiting the nearby Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame.

With the Pacific Ocean being in Long Beach’s backyard, it is only natural that water sports, such as sailing, are a popular form of entertainment. To celebrate the best sailing teams from around the world, the city is host to the Congressional Cup, a match race regatta and the only one of its kind to be held in the United States. For children that would like to learn more about sailing, the Leeway Sailing and Aquatics Center in the Belmont Shore area has many instructional programs available to teach children the fine art of sailing.
